Awapuni Primary School was opened on 8th September 1958.  It was opened to service the rapidly developing suburb of Awapuni and to relieve the pressure on Westend School. It opened with a roll of 170 pupils, mostly transferred from Westend School, and four teachers.  The inaugural principal was Mr A.G.E Stirling.

Development was not quick enough as one class of pupils had to be established in the adjacent Baptist Church hall on the 20th October.  The school was officially opened on the 25th November 1958 by Mr P.O.Skoglund, the Minister of Education, and by the Palmerston North Mayor Blair Tenant.  The first pupil to be enrolled was Diane Mary Eriksen.
