International Student Information

Awapuni Primary School has enrolled International Students since 1996 and provides a welcoming environment for Students from different cultures.  We have had students from: Korea, Iran. Philippines, Tokulau, Fiji  Indonesia and Solomon Islands.

We cater for pupils in their first 6 years of schooling.  We deliver the seven Curriculum areas of the New Zealand Curriculum Framework, especially focusing upon Literacy and Numeracy.  We accept students who have a sound  basic grasp of the English language and wish to immerse themselves in an English speaking environment. Students are taught in a regular New Zealand classroom with extra English language tuition provided individually or in small groups. We are a multicultural school.  All students in our school receive tuition in Māori language and  culture.

All students will be assessed upon arrival to ensure we provide appropriate assistance to make the most of their time at Awapuni Primary School. An indication of students ability to speak, understand, read  and write in English is required at the time of the  enrolment application.

We only accept enrolments for children 10 years old and younger living with their parents or legal guardians.

Due to changes in the ‘Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students’ requirements we are unable to enrol children 11 years and over.

A legal guardian is defined by the NZ Immigration Service as ‘the person the child normally resides with in their home country’.  Further information can be obtained from the NZ Immigration Service.

Once a student’s enrolment has been accepted the student and family must abide by Awapuni Primary  School’s rules and other agreements as negotiated with parents and legal guardians.

In arriving at a decision on a refund, the Principal will take into consideration:

·  the reasons and circumstances for withdrawal

·  costs already incurred by the school.

·  the salaries of teachers and support staff already committed to their instruction.

·  an amount which covers facilities and resources to date of withdrawal

· any possible refund of the International Student’s fee from the government.

Support Services

Awapuni Primary  aims to make the students feel as comfortable and secure as possible while they are away from home.  We want students not only to reach proficiency with their English and studies, but to also enjoy New Zealand’s wonderful environment and safe and secure lifestyle.

Students upon arrival will be welcomed and introduced to appropriate staff, principal, school coordinator, class teacher and other staff the students will meet on a day to day basis.  Full orientation to the school and our expectations and support systems will be explained to all students.  They will also be allocated a ‘buddy’ pupil to help them within the school and ease their way into mainstream classes.

Classroom Teachers and senior management closely support all students in conjunction with our school coordinator.

Each student will be assessed using our own internal  procedures, and provided with a programme to meet their individual needs.  Full records will be maintained.

ESOL Programmes

Trained Teachers will be the main providers of Students programmes and support staff will assist them.  Teachers at Awapuni are familiar with accommodating International Students within their classes.

ESOL tuition will be provided individually or in small groups according to students needs by school’s ESOL teaching assistant. This programme is provided under direct supervision of the schools special needs teacher.

We encourage pupils to involve themselves with school and local sports and community organisations.  The school organises Netball, hockey, cricket, t-ball, softball and miniball, with local clubs for soccer and rugby.  The Manawatu Taekwondo Club operates locally two nights a week.  The school also has vibrant choir and Maori cultural group, which International Students are encouraged to participate in.

Reporting

International Students will receive a written report in  November.  Children enrolled for short-term stays will be issued a brief report on the attitude to work, relationships and some attainment comments.  We welcome contact with and legal guardians.

Grievance Procedures

If an International Student, parent or legal guardian of an international student is unhappy about anything at school they should follow the following procedure:

1.Discuss the matter with the school coordinator and or class teacher.

2.      Students may prefer to discuss the problem with ESOL tutor

3.      Meet with the Principal [Martin Elms] along with coordinator or class teacher.

4.      At this point we would undertake an internal process to investigate the concern or complaint.

5.      Should the issue not be resolved to the parent or legal guardian’s  satisfaction then the complaint must be made in writing to the Board of Trustees and an advocate will be offered to assist in the process.

6.        Parents and legal guardians will be given every assistance to access IEAA.

Health and Travel Insurance

The Code of Practice for International Students states: “Most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while they are in New Zealand unless they are:

·                                 A resident or citizen of Australia; or

·                                 A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand; or

·                                 The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more

If you do not belong to one of these categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you will be liable for the full costs of that treatment.  Therefore all students must have Health and Travel Insurance for the duration of their stay in New Zealand”.

One provider is Uni Care and further information and application forms are available on their web site www.uni-care.org

Evidence of the policy will be asked for on enrolment.

Your policy must include fee protection. The Board has a refunds policy for repayment of unspent tuition  fees should a students enrolment be terminated early.

Immigration

The Code of Practice states: “Full details of Visa and Permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service.”

This can be viewed on their web site at www.immigration.govt.nz
